Brief Overview

  • Located in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, Indi; nearest town is Uttarkashi

  • The trail takes you through scree and boulder fields, offering marvelous views of Himalayan glaciers such as Meru, Kirti, and the mythologically significant Gangotri

  • The tip of the Gangotri glacier, called Gaumukh for its snout like appearance, is the source of the River Ganga. It was here that Bhagirath worshiped Lord Shiva and Mother Ganga descended on earth. This is one of the four Holy Dhams (pilgrimage sites) of the North

  • The climax of the trek is Tapovan, a meadow at the foot of Mt. Shivling offering a breathtaking base to summit view of the mountain bordered by the Kedar dome and Bhagirathi peaks. Blue Mountain Goats can be seen frolicking on the ridges of these mountains

  • Best time to visit is May to June and September to October

  • Last ATM point is available in Uttarkashi


  • Day 1 - Pick-up from Dehradun Railway Station (6:30 AM), drive to Gangotri, Uttarkashi by taxi – 275 km (11/12 hrs)

  • Day 2 - Trek to Chirbasa from Gangotri – 9 km (6 hrs)

  • Day 3 - Trek to Bhojbasa from Chirbasa – 5 km (3/4 hrs)

  • Day 4 - Trek to Tapovan via Gaumukh from Bhojbasa – 7 km (6/7 hrs)

  • Day 5 - Explore Tapovan and Neel Tal, Chaukhamba and Shivling Base

  • Day 6 - Trek back to Bhojbasa camp from Tapovan – 7 km drive (5 hrs)

  • Day 7 - Trek back to Gangotri from Bhojbasa – 14 km drive (6/7 hrs)

  • Day 8 - After breakfast head back to Dehradun from Gangotri – 275 km (11/12 hrs)

Overnight bus to ISBT, Dehradun from ISBT, Kashmere Gate, Delhi (see bus chart)
Suggestion: To take Uttarakhand Govt. buses from Delhi ISBT as they are punctual and quicker to reach than Pvt. Buses. They will drop you at Dehradun ISBT which is 6 km from Railway Station

  • Smoking cigarettes makes you lethargic & can potentially shortened your breath during the trek, we recommend not to smoke for your own good

  • Buying drugs or any illegal material is strictly prohibited

  • Instructions from guide should be paid attention to and followed
